As strange as it may seem to you, there was even a naval battle in Lake Pamvotida. It was in the distant 1379 when 200 Albanians managed to occupy the northeastern citadel of the castle. Another group of Vlachs, Albanians, and Bulgarians from the island tried to disembark at the castle by boat. The defending locals using boats and canoes prevented their landing by overturning the enemy boat taking the first team by surprise and claimed victory.

Ιn the winter of 1434 Durahan Pasha was marching on the frozen lake, accompanied by his whole army, considering the lake to be solid ground. When he reached the opposite bank, he realised that the whole army was in danger and he considered that Mother Mary protected him, so he created the Monastery of Durahani there.

One of the most famous spots of the lake of Ioannina is the "Twelve". As the urban legend dictates it is a point where the lake has a depth of 12 meters. The maximum depth of the lake does not exceed 9 meters though. Then what does 12 symbolize? In the place we call "Twelve", there was one of the numerous Italian outposts scattered in the area. One of them was the outpost bearing the number 120. The outpost may no longer exist, but Twelve is here for so many years later, keeping this memory alive.

Another landmark of Ioannina is the Clock Tower. What does the clock count? An illusion... The so-called Time. It is generally acknowledged by science that the present, the past and the future are an illusion. In the past, the castle looked like an island. Its moat reached up to the present Metropolis of Ioannina. That was another mechanism of the impregnable castle of Ioannina. However, after the liberation of the city for hygiene reasons the moat was destroyed and replaced with a coastal road and oak trees that were planted around the castle. With the change of seasons, the oak trees make the castle "invisible" when you are not under them.
